Day 5 - Banaras

Post breakfast, head to one of the oldest temples in Hinduism, Sri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Deriving its name from the city Kashi, the temple was built in 1780 by the Late Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest of Shiva temples. The main deity housed within its premises is known by the name Vishwanatha or Vishweshwara, both translating to mean 'ruler of the universe.' The temple is also the starting point of the sacred Panchkoshi Yatra—a 88.5 km long barefoot walk encircling Kashi.

Later visit other popular temples – Kaal Bhairav, Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, Durga Kund Mandir, Annapurna Devi Temple, Kabir Ashram etc in Kashi.

A visit to Banaras can never be complete without at least buying one sari or a few yards of the Banarasi silk fabric. The real work is done by the ‘gaddidars’, the wholesale operators who have emerged from a family tradition of weaving. The gaddidars constitute an experience to be savoured: classic white sheets and bolsters spread across the whole room, sitting on the floor, a choice of lassi or tea, or anything Banarasi you care to ask for… before the business of unfurling and discussing the saris begins.
